Reserve guard Derrick Edmonds poured in 24 points and Montana State held Eastern Washington to 39% shooting in the second half as the Bobcats earned a hard-fought 82-70 win in Bozeman on Thursday.
Edmonds led a Bobcat comeback by hitting 6-of-8 from the field, including 6-for-7 from three-point range. He was also part of a four-man Bobcat rotation that limited Eastern's freshman sensation Rodney Stuckey to 18 points on 6-for-20 shooting.
"We were much more efficient offensively in the second half," said MSU coach Mick Durham. "We got more points in transition. It seems like we got the ball inside more, too. We were better defensively in the second half, too."
The Bobcats shot 51% for the game, 55% in the second half, and held Eastern to 44% shooting for the game. Stuckey, leading the league at 23.2 points a game, came in five points under his average.
"We were better defensively tonight," Durham said. "Jacques Wilson had a lot to do with that. Our guards did a nice job tonight."
The game looked like anything but a double-digit Bobcat win in the early going. MSU jumped to a five-point lead, but Eastern launched an 11-2 run to take a 29-20 lead with 7:14 to play in the half. The Eagles led 35-35 when the Bobcats used a 10-0 run to climb back into the game, but a Kellen Williams free throw gave Eastern a four-point lead with 19 seconds to play.
The Bobcats turned the tide of the game at the close of the second half, when Derrick Edmonds was clubbed on a three-point attempt. Edmonds nailed all three free throws, and MSU entered the locker room down 39-38.
"They definitely had us reeling in the first half," Durham said. "There's no question that the key part of the game was that little run at the end of the half, and Derrick's three free throws."
After Eastern grabbed a 45-42 lead early in the second half, MSU took control with an 11-0 run, triggered by an Edmonds three-pointer. Al Beye's dunk at 10:44 gave MSU a 59-49 lead. The closest Eastern got the rest of the way was five.
Montana State struggled from the free throw line through most of the night, but hit its last eight to finish 12-for-20 from the line. The Bobcats out-rebounded Eastern 39-to-32, and forced 13 turnovers to EWU's dozen.
