DeHaan Wins DeGame: Bobcats Upset NAU

“The kids did a great job battling all game,” said first-year MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I thought it was our best defensive effort of the season. We did a nice job denying the post.”
DeHaan, a graduate of Manhattan Christian, paced the Bobcats with a team-high 16 points, connecting on six-of-eight from the field. Also in double-figures for Montana State (2-13, 1-2) was Alyssa Nelson with 14 points, including an 8-9 effort from the free throw line.
MSU opened the game taking a 12-3 lead at the 14:50 mark on a Shannon Bosley field-goal. The Bobcats entered intermission with a 27-23 advantage.
In the second stanza, Northern Arizona (13-6, 3-1) took its first lead of the half at 37-35 on a Kim Winkfield layin at the 14:13 mark. The Lumberjacks increased the margin to 45-39 with 10:26 remaining on a Sandra Viksryte basket.
NAU held the lead until a Jenny Heringer three-pointer tied the score at 49-all with 3:54 remaining. The Lumberjacks answered with a Sade Cunningham trey; before Nelson gave the Bobcats a 55-54 lead with 45-seconds left on a pair of free throws.
Megan Porter converted the second of two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to tie the score.
MSU had two opportunities to score in the final five-seconds as Heringer and DeHaan each got off a shot.
Viksryte pulled down the defensive rebound off the DeHaan miss, but was called for traveling. The turnover set up DeHaan’s game-winning basket.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 34 percent from the field, but converted 24-29 from the free throw line. NAU out-rebounded MSU 38-31. Montana State was paced under the boards by Whitney Connolly with seven rebounds.
NAU was paced in the loss by Viksryte with a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Montana State will travel to Eastern Washington on Thursday.
