Morton and Bobcats Ring in New Year with Victory

Behind a career-high 28 points from junior Scotta Morton, the Bobcats snapped a 14-game losing streak and gave head coach Tricia Binford her first career victory with a 92-84 decision over Utah Valley State, Monday night.
“Boy, it sure does feel good,” Binford said. “We’ve been competitive and very close to a couple of wins in the last few weeks. The kids did an excellent job scoring the ball.
“We’ll address our defense tomorrow,” Binford added. “We’re going to enjoy the victory.”
Morton, a graduate of Bozeman High, recorded her third straight career-high connecting on 11-of-20 from the field and four-of-five from the free throw line.
“Scotta (Morton) has really taken leadership of the team,” Binford said. “She has been phenomenal the last month.”
All five Montana State (1-11) starters scored in double-figures; including Nubia Garcia 16, Amanda DeHaan 13, Jenny Heringer 11 and Alyssa Nelson 10.
For the game, MSU shot a season-high 57 percent from the field, including a red hot 71 percent (20-28) in the second stanza.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and built a 36-20 advantage on a Shannon Bosley basket at the 2:41 mark. MSU entered intermission with a 38-24 lead.
In the second half, Montana State took its largest lead at 72-54 on a Heringer three-pointer with 7:28 remaining, before Utah Valley State (4-9) cut the margin to 83-75 with 1:14 remaining.
The Wolverines out-rebounded MSU 46-33. The Bobcats were paced by DeHaan and Morton with six rebounds, apiece. MSU forced UVS into 26 turnovers and recorded six blocked shots.
UVS was paced by freshman Robyn Fairbanks with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
Montana State will be idle until it hosts intra-state rival Montana, Jan. 13 to tip-off the Big Sky Conference season.
