Montana State (1-13, 0-2) held a 54-53 advantage with 5:05 remaining on a Scotta Morton jumper, before Sacramento State (6-9, 1-2) notched seven unanswered points- four coming from the free throw line.
Sacramento State’s Cindy Alldrin converted 8-8 from the line in the final 3:30 to secure the win for the Hornets.
“We started fouling too early and I take the blame for that,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We also gave up too many offensive boards in the second half.”
Montana State, who was out-rebounded 37-29 for the game, gave up eight offensive boards in the second half.
The Bobcats were paced by Whitney Connolly, who notched a season-high 19 points on 8-10 from the field. Also in double-digits were Morton 10 and Jenny Heringer 10.
Heringer, a freshman from Billings, also added a team-high six rebounds, while chipping in four assists, two steals and a block.
“I was very pleased with Whitney’s performance,” Binford said. “Now, we need her to be consistent with what she’s doing on the court.”
Montana State built its largest lead of the game at 21-14 on a Connolly layin with 9:36 left in the opening period. Sacrament State came back to tie the score at 32-all at intermission.
In the second half, Sacramento State opened a 41-34 advantage at the 14:50 mark on a Lindsay Calmettes three-pointer.
MSU fought back to take a 43-42 advantage on an Alyssa Nelson jumper with 11:59 left. The two team traded leads nine times until the Hornets pulled away in the final five minutes.
Sacramento State was paced by Lindsay Heard with 18 points, while Kim Sheehy and Cindy Alldrin added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
MSU will host league-leading Northern Arizona on Saturday at 2:05 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
