Montana Wins Battle of Boards

“Rebounding was the big difference,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Montana got 23 offensive boards, and that won’t win us a lot of ball games.”
Montana (12-2, 1-0) got off to a quick 19-6 advantage as Montana State (1-12, 0-1) struggled with its shooting. The Lady Griz entered intermission with 33-16 lead. MSU shot 17 percent from the field in the opening stanza.
“I thought we were a little stagnant on offense,” Binford said. “Against a defense like that you have to move the ball and get them to switch. I thought we got some open looks, but we just couldn’t knock them down.”
In the second half, UM built a 39-19 lead, before the Bobcats fought back to pull to within 43-33 with 10:52 remaining on a Scotta Morton three-pointer. The Lady Griz answered with a 5-0 run to put the game away.
MSU was led in the loss by freshman Jenny Heringer with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Also in double-digits for the Bobcats were Morton 11 and Alyssa Nelson 10.
Heringer also paced MSU with nine rebounds and two assists.
The Bobcats played without the services of starting forward Nubia Garcia, who is sidelined for four weeks with a knee injury.
Montana had three players in double-figures led by Mandy Morales and Katie Edwards with 13 points, and Sonya Rogers with 10. Morales also posted a game-high 13 rebounds.
Montana State will host Sacramento State on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
