Montana State in Sixth Place After Alpine Opening Day

Defending national champion Denver held on to first place with 426 points, followed by Colorado 406, Utah 368, UAA 366, New Mexico 355, MSU 262, Nevada 216, Western State 151, Whitman 148, Wyoming 52 and Boise State 33.
Spela Bertoncelj, a transfer from Boise State, paced the Bobcat women’s squad, finishing seventh in the slalom with a two-run time of 1:34.09. Also placing in MSU’s top three were ChiChi Williams, 16th, 1:38.05; and Gretchen Glaser, 21st, 1:43.36.
Colorado’s Lucie Zickova won the individual crown in a time of 1:30.95.
The MSU men were led by Tyler Smedsrud, who completed the two-run giant slalom in course in 2:01.97. He was followed by Dan McKay, 23rd, 2:03.18; and Don Brockett, 25th, 2:03.77.
Scott Veenis of Utah captured the men’s title in 1:58.26.
“It was a good starting point to the season,” said MSU head coach Dan Brelsford.. “We came out of the opening day with a lot of positives. Everyone is upbeat and ready to race.”
The UAA Invitational concludes on Thursday with the men’s slalom and the women’s giant slalom events.
The Bobcats will host the MSU Invitational Jan. 14-15 at Bohart Ranch and Big Sky Resort.
