The sweep of the Aggies gave MSU a school-record 24 consecutive game wins—a streak of eight straight matches.
“I was very excited that we were able to be consistent and steady for the entire match,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We still have to work on giving up four or five point runs. Conversely, I was ecstatic with our 12-point run in game two.”
Montana State (4-3) opened the game red hot from the field. MSU hit .333 from the floor, while holding UC Davis (2-4) to -.146. The Bobcats jumped out to an early 13-3 advantage following a Kim Stonehouse kill and built the margin to 21-9 on a Zanto kill. An Aggie hitting error gave MSU the first game.
In the second stanza, with the scored tied at 14-all, Montana State rattled off a 12-0 run, sparked by three Zanto kills. Another UCD hitting error gave the Bobcats the victory.
In the final stanza, MSU pulled away at 16-14 with an 8-1 run for a 24-15 advantage. The stretch was fueled by three Zanto winners. The Bobcats won the match following an Aggie ball-handling error.
“It was nice to be home and in front of our crowd,” Malauulu said. “I’ll let them enjoy this for ten-minutes; and then our attention turns to No. 14-ranked Missouri.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat victory was walk-on sophomore Patti Anderson, who tallied five kills and a match and career-high 18 digs. MSU libero Kandice Kelly also hit double-digit digs with 16. Redshirt freshman setter Brittni Sesler dished out 28 assists, while adding seven digs and five kills. Angela Wiebe chipped in a match-high four blocks.
UCD was paced by Chantal Paschetta with seven kills and nine digs.
MSU hosts the 11th annual Holiday Inn Classic, Friday and Saturday. The classic features No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 14 Missouri and future Big Sky Conference opponent Northern Colorado. The Bobcats open play against Missouri at 7 p.m.
