Bobcat Spikers Open Home Slate on Thursday

THE HOME OPENER: The Montana State volleyball team will open its 2005 home slate when they face UC Davis, Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in Shroyer Gym. MSU enters the match 3-3 overall, while the Aggies are 2-3, including a 3-0 victory over Big Sky Conference rival Idaho State University.
THE 11TH HOLIDAY INN CLASSIC: MSU will host the 11th annual Holiday Inn Classic on Friday and Saturday in Shroyer Gym. The Holiday Inn Classic is one of the premier tournaments in collegiate volleyball, and this year is no exception. In fact, this season’s field is the toughest in the history of the Holiday Inn Classic. Participating this weekend will be #9 Wisconsin, #14 Missouri and future Big Sky opponent Northern Colorado. TAKING A LOOK BACK: Montana State went 1-2 last weekend, losing to a pair of schools receiving top 25 votes, and defeating Utah Valley State. In its 3-0 loss to Brigham Young, the Bobcats were paced by Megan Zanto, who collected four kills and two blocks, while hitting .444 from the floor. Against Kansas, junior middle blocker Angela Wiebe recorded a career-high 12 kills, while Zanto and Kim Stonehouse each added 11. In MSU’s 3-1 victory over Utah Valley State, Wiebe recorded her second career-high in as many days, notching 14 kills against the Wolverines. Also hitting double-digit kills against UVSC where Stonehouse 14, Meggie Malyurek 12, and Zanto 10. Kandice Kelly had a team-high 16 digs in the win.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: UC-Davis is 2-3 overall, winning its last two decisions over Washington State and Idaho State. The Aggies are led by Nicole Read and Chantal Paschetta, who average 4.27 and 4.00 kills, respectively. No. 14 Missouri is 3-0 overall and have knocked off Utah, #9 Tennessee and Mssouri-Kansas City, all in three games. The Tigers are led by setter Lindsay Hunter, who is averaging 16.67 assists per game, while Na Yang and Jessica Vander Kooi average 4.33 and 4.17 kills. Northern Colorado is 1-3 overall, after recording its first win of the season in a five-game thriller over Wyoming. The Bears have dropped matches to Creighton, Iowa State and Boise State. No. 9 Wisconsin is 3-0 overall with victories over San Jose State, Weber State and Butler. The Badgers have been paced by Audra Jeffers, who averages 3.86 kills per game.
THE CRYSTAL BALL: The Bobcats were picked to finish third in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll. MSU garnered 36 votes. Defending league-champion Sacramento State was tabbed first with 49 points.
