Kim Stonehouse recorded a team-high 12 kills to pace three Montana State players in double-figure kills as the Bobcats rolled to a 30-24, 30-19, 30-27 win over Montana, Friday night in front of a sold-out Shroyer Gym.
“I’m happy that we won and got it done,” said MSU third-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “It wasn’t pretty and our hitting numbers went south throughout the match, but give the girls credit for keeping an even keel in a match that’s always full of emotion.”
Also in double-figure kills for Montana State (8-8, 2-1) were Meggie Malyurek and Megan Zanto with 11 and ten kills, respectively. In addition, Zanto hit .562 from the floor and led all players with a match-high six blocks.
Freshman setter Brittni Sesler dished out 40 assists and added three aces, six digs and two blocks. Libero Kandice Kelly paced the Bobcats with 15 digs.
Montana State opened the match staking an early 13-6 advantage following a Zanto block. Montana (10-7, 0-3) answered back to pull to within 17-16, before the Bobcats responded with a 4-0 run to put the game out of reach. MSU won the opening stanza on a Grizzly service error.
In the second set, the Bobcats opened a 17-8 lead on a Raelene Purnell kill and maintained a comfortable advantage for the entire game, winning on a Montana hitting miscue.
In the final game, MSU held a 25-15 lead on a Stonehouse kill. Following a Sesler kill, the Bobcats held a 29-23 advantage, before UM answered with four straight points to close to within 29-27. Stonehouse put the match away with her 12th kill of the night.
Purnell, who received her first start of the season for Angela Wiebe, ended with eight kills, a .350 attack mark and two blocks. Wiebe is sidelined indefinitely with an illness.
“We still have to take care of details,” Malauulu said. “Sometimes we become a little complacent, and that’s something we need to work on if we want to be Big Sky champions.”
Montana was led by Claudia Houle with 14 kills and 11 digs.
The Shroyer Gym sellout of 2,117 was the sixth largest in school history. MSU has won eight consecutive Big Sky matches in Shroyer Gym—a streak of 24 straight games.
MSU will host Eastern Washington on Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
