Bobcat Harriers Set for Montana Invitational

The men’s 8-kilometer race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 6-kilometer event at 10:45 a.m. Both races will be held at the UM Golf Course.
In addition, the race will serve as the annual ‘Cat-Griz dual. Both the MSU men’s and women’s teams defeated Montana, last fall.
Competing on Saturday will be MSU, UM, Weber State, Washington State, Eastern Washington and Utah.
“With four Big Sky teams competing, this is a nice, early season race,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “We’ll get to see how we stack up with the northern division of the Big Sky Conference.”
The Bobcat men’s team will welcome back junior Tony Bachmann. Bachmann, who sat out the MSU Invitational two weeks ago to illness, was an All-Big Sky Conference performer, last fall.
Also looking to contribute on Saturday will be Kurt Michels who led MSU at the Bobcat Invitational placing fifth overall. He’ll be joined by newcomers Graydon Curry, Peter Hawkins, Devin McDowell, Chris Baldus and Greg Smith. Matt Adams will sit out the meet due to illness.
“Tony and Kurt really give us a good one-two punch,” Kennedy said. “We’ll look to see how we develop after that. This will be a good opportunity to grow and gain experience. It’s also ‘Cat-Griz, so that will give us plenty of incentive, as well.”
The Montana State women’s team will enter the race with a question mark at the top of its line-up. All-Big Sky performer Elisabeth Driscoll is battling a knee injury and is listed as questionable for Saturday’s race.
Kennedy will look to the sister act of Kayla and Jayme Larson, along with sophomore Carrie Gottschalk. The Larson sisters finished side-by-side at the MSU Invitational, two weeks ago, while Gottschalk was 13th overall.
“Our top three kids look good and are ready to roll,” Kennedy said. “We’ll need a couple of kids to step-up into the No. 4 and 5 spots, and I’ll be anxious to see who it will be, as it will play a significant role in the dual scoring.”
Looking to finish in MSU’s top five will be Marilee Woyth, Kristin Parker, Ana Casillas and Leah Thompson.
In other news, the first NCAA Mountain Region poll was released this week. On the men’s side, the Bobcats ranked tenth. Other Big Sky schools that ranked among the top ten were #6 Northern Arizona, #7 Weber State and #8 Idaho State.
MSU ranked ninth in the women’s poll. Other Big Sky schools included #3 Northern Arizona and #6 Weber State.
