'Cat Spikers Host Grizzlies on Friday Night

HOMECOMING: The match will be part of MSU’s Homecoming Week activities. Ticket prices are $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for children. The match will be the only one for the Bobcats this weekend and will begin a three-match homestand that will include matches against Eastern Washington and Portland State, Oct. 7-8.
TAKING A LOOK BACK: Montana State opened its Big Sky season with a road split at Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. The Bobcats opened Big Sky play in the Hornet’s Nest and were handed a 30-15, 30-23, 26-30, 30-25 setback by Sacramento State. In the first two games, MSU hit a dismal .000 from the field, before hitting .273 in the third stanza for the win. In the fourth set, the Bobcats held a 24-22 lead, before the Hornets answered back to win the match. Montana State was led by Kim Stonehouse and Meggie Malyurek with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Middle blocker Megan Zanto paced MSU with eight blocks, while Malyurek added 16 digs, and libero Kandice Kelly 14. MSU righted the ship at Northern Arizona with a 30-27, 30-25, 30-28 win over the Lumberjacks. Stonehouse and Malyurek again paced the ‘Cats with 17 and 11 kills, apiece. Middle blocker Angela Wiebe chipped in seven kills, a .353 attack mark and a season-high nine blocks.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Montana is 10-6 overall and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play, after dropping a pair of matches at Northern Arizona and Sacramento State. Against Northern Arizona, the Grizzlies hit .065, losing 30-21, 30-25, 30-23 to the Lumberjacks. UM was led in the loss by Claudia Houle with 15 kills. Sacramento State handed Montana a 30-21, 30-16, 30-20 setback on Saturday night. The Grizzlies were again paced by Houle with 13 kills. Montana is off to its best start since the 2000 season, when it opened the season 10-5. On the year, UM has been guided by Houle, who averages 4.70 kills and 4.27 digs per game. Montana State leads the all-time series 43-38 dating back to the 1976 season.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have perhaps the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Six of MSU’s seven losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #7 Missouri, #8 Wisconsin, #14 California and #20 BYU.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: Junior Meggie Malyurek is MSU’s Player of the Week after averaging 3.14 kills and 4.14 digs, last weekend. In addition, she averaged 1.14 blocks and .42 aces per contest. Malyurek notched two double-doubles on the weekend, giving her six on the season.
