Surprise or No, Daly Leads Bobcat 'D'

It didn't take long for Bobby Daly's dream to come true.
On North Dakota State's first drive of Saturday's game at Montana State, Daly made his pass drop, read Bison quarterback Steve Walker, and made his move. The Montana State redshirt freshman, who grew up dreaming of following in the footsteps of his father, former Bobcat Jay Daly, intercepted Walker's pass.
"What a way to start my career (as a starter)," a still-unsettled Daly said following MSU's 20-17 win over the #8 Bison on Saturday. "It's an undescribable feeling."
Starting for injurede All-Big Sky linebacker Mac Mollohan, Daly registered 10 tackles to go with his interception. He also harrassed Walker repeatedly on blitzes.
"It was a solid start for Bobby Daly," said MSU coach Mike Kramer. "Not flawless, but solid."
Although Mollohan's injury after last week's loss at Cal Poly was publicly acknowledged by Kramer, his staff entered the week set on moving senior Nick Marudas inside. That plan didn't last long.
"I kind of figured it out on Wednesday or Thursday," Daly said, "and Coach Kramer told me Thursday (about starting). I just wanted to be as prepared as I could."
One avenue of preparation came from a source close to home. "I called my Dad a lot," Daly said. "He calmed me down and assured me I was ready and that I'd play well. That helped me a lot."
Still, the hours leading up to Saturday's kickoff tortured the redshirt freshman from Helena. "It was the most nervous week of my life," he said. "I was a nervous wreck, I had trouble sleeping."
With the probability of more playing time in the upcoming weeks, Daly knows his work is cut out for him, and he knows much better how to prepare. "This week really helped me learn how to prepare for a game," Daly said. "Coach Christoff prepared me for practice and showed me how to mentally prepare for more responsibility, and Mac (Mollohan) taught me how to watch film to get ready for a game. I really learned a lot from going through what I did this week."
Still, the second-generation Bobcat was not ready to exit the moment.
"This is what I've been dreaming of," he said. "It's indescribable."
