Sacramento State Downs Montana State Spikers in Big Sky Opener

Sacramento State (9-6, 1-0) out-hit the Bobcats .219 to .071 and held a six block advantage at the net. The Hornets were paced in the win by Atlee Hubbard with 21 kills to pace four Sacramento State players in double-figure kills.
“We were very inconsistent with our play, and our setters had a tough time getting the ball where it needed to go,” said third-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We didn’t start to compete until the third game. I was happy with our response in games three and four, but you just can’t get down 2-0 and think you’re going to crawl out of the hole against a team as good as Sacramento State.”
Montana State (6-8, 0-1) was paced by Kim Stonehouse with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Meggie Malyurek added 11 kills, a team-high 16 digs and five blocks. Malyurek, a native of Big Horn, Wyo., recorded her 1,000th career dig, making her only the fourth player in MSU history to accomplish the milestone.
Sacramento State opened the match out-hitting the Bobcats .282 to -.097, rolling to the opening game win. In the second stanza, the Hornets pulled away from a 15-14 advantage to build a seven-point lead. Leading 24-21, Sacramento State outscored MSU 6-2 down the stretch.
In the third set, the Bobcats got off to a quick start and held off a late Sacramento State rally to send the match to a fourth game. In the final stanza, MSU held a 24-22 lead following a Raelene Purnell kill. However, the Hornets used strong blocking and put together an 8-1 run to get the victory.
Montana State will play at Northern Arizona on Saturday in Flagstaff.
