Bobcat Spikers Invade Hornet's Nest

BIG SKY TIME: The Montana State volleyball team will embark on its 18th season in the Big Sky Conference, this week. The Bobcats will open the 2005 Big Sky Conference slate at defending league champion Sacramento State. The match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. (MST) in the Hornet’s Nest. MSU will continue its Western road-swing at Northern Arizona, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. in Flagstaff. Following the opening weekend of action, Montana State will open its Big Sky home slate in Shroyer Gym against intra state rival Montana on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.-- Homecoming weekend.
TAKING A LOOK BACK: Montana State concluded its non-conference tournament season with a 1-2 mark at the Nevada Circus Circus/Molten Invitational in Reno. The Bobcats opened the weekend with a 27-30, 30-25, 30-15, 30-17 win over Akron. MSU was paced in the win by Meggie Malyurek with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Megan Zanto and Kim Stonehouse added 11 and ten kills, respectively. Sophmore Raelene Purnell came off the bench to notch a season-high eight kills and .800 attack mark. On Saturday, the Bobcats faced its sixth top 25 school, losing to #21 Cal in a hotly contested 30-26, 30-28, 30-27 match. Stonehouse posted 18 kills, while Malyurek chipped in ten put-aways in the loss. In the tournament finale’, Nevada handed the Bobcats a 30-26, 27-30, 30-25, 30-23 setback. Malyurek paced MSU with 16 kills, while Stonehouse and Zanto added 14 and 11 winners, respectively.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Sacramento State is 8-6 overall, after a 3-1 victory over San Francisco on Tuesday evening. The Hornets are led by 30-year veteran Debby Colberg, who has amassed a 750-275 career mark. This season Sacramento State has been paced byAtlee Hubbard and Lindsay Haupt, who average 3.12 and 2.74 kills, respectively. In addition, Haupt is averaging a team-best 1.30 blocks per game. Northern Arizona is 1-8 on the season and will face Montana on Thursday before hosting the Bobcats. On the season, the Lumberjacks have been guided by Ellie Butterfield, who is averaging 3.26 kills and 1.82 digs per contest.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have perhaps the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Six of MSU’s seven losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #8 Missouri, #10 Wisconsin, #22 BYU, #24 Kansas and #25 Cal.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: Junior Meggie Malyurek is MSU’s Player of the Week after averaging 4.00 kills and 3.46 digs at the Nevada tourney. She had a weekend high 18 kills versus the Wolf Pack.
