Bobcat Spikers Win Nevada Opener

Senior Meggie Malyurek led all players with a match-high 18 kills, while adding 14 digs. Also hitting double-digit kill figures for Montana State (6-5) was Megan Zanto 11 and Kim Stonehouse with ten. Sophomore outside hitter Raelene Purnell contributed eight kills and an impressive .800 attack mark, along with four blocks.
“Raelene (Purnell) was a difference-maker,” said MSU third-year coach Miya Malauulu. “They couldn’t stop her and it seemed she always got us a key point.”
Defensively, Zanto paced the Bobcats with a season-high ten blocks, while junior libero Kandice Kelly notched a match-high 18 digs.
“We didn’t get off to a great start, but I really like the way we responded in the next three games,” Malauulu said. “Against a ranked team like Cal, and a very good squad like Nevada, we’ll need to answer the opening bell.”
Akron (5-5) was paced in the loss by Jennifer Stewart with 15 kills and 14 digs.
MSU will play #21 Cal and Nevada on Saturday.
