Bobcat Harriers Open Season with MSU Invitational
9/16/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The men’s race will start at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s event at 9:45 a.m., at Bridger Creek Golf Course.
The meet will feature programs from the NCAA Mountain Region. Along side the Bobcats will be teams from Idaho State, Utah State, Utah Valley State, MSU-Billings, and Westminster. In addition, Utah and Concordia College will compete in the women’s race, while Team ZPT (made up of area runners) will compete on the men’s side.
Utah State and Idaho State are the favorites in the men’s race, but look for the Bobcats to challenge. Utah State finished sixth at the 2004 NCAA Mountain Region Championships. Trevor Bal and Clark Bryner are expected to lead the Aggies. Idaho State was picked to finish third in the Big Sky Conference in the coach’s poll. The Bengals finished 11th at the 2004 NCAA Mountain Region Championships.
The Bobcat men will be led by Tony Bachman and newly appointed captain Kurt Michels, a transfer from Utah. Michels transferred after the Utes discontinued its men’s cross country program. Michels prepped at Flathead High School in Kalispell. Bachman as a sophomore earned All-Big Sky honors.
The freshmen will make their debut this weekend with Graydon Curry, Matt Adams, Peter Hawkins, and Bozeman High product Chris Baldus.
The women’s race will feature one of the highest ranked teams in the NCAA Mountain Region poll, Utah State. Utah State is currently ranked fourth and will be led by Tiffany Strickland and Ashley Johnson. Another Utah team looks to make a statement at this year’s meet, the Utah Utes. The Utes will be led by Nicki Hugie, Chelsea DiGraza, and Ashlee Warncik.
The Bobcat women will be led by Elisabeth Driscoll, who garnered All-Big Sky honors with a top ten finish last year at the Big Sky Championships. She will be accompanied by Larson sisters Kayla and Jayme, and Carrie Gottschalk.
Making their debuts this Saturday are newcomers: Marilee Woyth, Kristin Parker, and Leah Thompson
Ashley Hadway, MSU’s top runner last fall, will redshirt the 2005 season.
