'Cat Spikers Head to Biggest Little City

THE BIGGEST LITTLE CITY: The Montana State volleyball team take its act on the road for the final non-conference tune-up before opening the Big Sky Conference season at Sacramento State, Sept. 22. This weekend, MSU will travel to Reno, Nevada for the Circus Circus/Molten Invitational. The Bobcats will open tournament play against the University of Akron, Friday, Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. (MST). MSU will continue play on Saturday against #21 Cal at 1 p.m., followed by Nevada at 6 p.m.
TAKING A LOOK BACK: Montana State went 2-2 last weekend, defeating UC Davis and Northern Colorado, while falling to #9 Wisconsin and #13 Missouri. Against UC Davis, the Bobcats were paced by senior middle blocker Megan Zanto, who notched 10 kills, a .476 attack mark and three blocks. MSU opened the 11th Annual Holiday Inn Classic with a 3-0 setback to #13 Missouri. Kim Stonehouse guided the Bobcats with nine kills, a .563 attack mark and seven digs. Montana State rebounded from the loss with a 3-1 victory over future Big Sky foe Northern Colorado. Stonehouse and Zanto combined for 31 kills, while Brittni Sesler dished out 43 assists and added seven digs. In the tournament finale’ #9 Wisconsin downed the Bobcats 3-0. MSU was led by Meggie Malyurek with eight kills and five digs, while libero Kandice Kelly added a team-high 16 digs.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Akron is 5-4 overall and have dropped four matches in a row, after beginning the season with five straight victories. The Zips have defeated Youngstown State, Canisius, Robert Morris, Elon and Oakland. Akron has been paced in the early season by Jennifer Stewart and Molly Rutledge, who average 4.03 and 3.83 kills, respectively. No. 21 Cal is 5-1 overall. The Golden Bears dropped their first match of the season in a 3-2 decision to San Diego on Saturday. Cal is led by Angie Pressy, who averages 4.15 kills per game, while setter Samantha Carter is dishing out 13.15 assists per game. Nevada, who received top 25 votes in the early polls, is 2-5 overall. The Wolf Pack has dropped two five-game matches, including BYU and #13 UCLA. Nevada is led by Carly Sorensen and Salaia Salave’a, who average 4.33 and 4.22 kills per game, respectively.
THE CRYSTAL BALL: The Bobcats were picked to finish third in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll. MSU garnered 36 votes. Defending league-champion Sacramento State was tabbed first with 49 points.
BOBCAT OF THE WEEK: MSU’s Kim Stonehouse was named Montana State Player of the Week for her efforts, last weekend. Stonehouse averaged 2.67 kills and 3.33 digs, while hitting an impressive .351 from the field. The native of Medicine Hat, Alberta had her best match of the weekend against #13 Missouri with nine kills, no errors on 16 attempts for a .563 attack percentage. She also added seven digs against the Tigers.
