‘Cats Compete, But Come up Short

BYU improved its record to 2-0 with a 30-21, 30-20, 30-28 win over MSU.
In the opening game, BYU built a 7-4 advantage before Montana State (2-2) answered with a 13-7 run to take a 17-14 lead behind back-to-back kills from Patti Anderson. The Cougars tied the game at 19-all, before MSU’s serve-receive allowed three consecutive aces and BYU pulled away for the win.
The second game was all Brigham Young, as the Cougars hit .462 from the field, while limiting MSU to .030.
In the final set, BYU held a 23-18 advantage, before the Bobcats battled back to close to within 25-24 on a Megan Zanto kill. BYU went ahead 27-24, but again, MSU responded to tie the score at 28-all on a Zanto ace. The Cougars finished of the game with a block and kill to record the victory.
“We’re going to take away from the match the fact that we are getting much better, but we’re still not satisfied,” said MSU third-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “Our kids need to buy into the fact that they can play with the BYU’s of the world. We were right with them, but then we would have a few mental lapses. BYU was the more patient team.”
MSU was paced by Kim Stonehouse with seven kills, while Angela Wiebe added five kills and two blocks. Bobcat senior middle blocker Megan Zanto finished with four kills, a .444 attack mark and two blocks. Kandice Kelly led all players with 16 digs.
MSU will play Kansas, another team receiving top 25 votes, Friday afternoon.
