Bobcat Spikers Head to Cougar Country

COUGAR COUNTRY: The Montana State volleyball team will continue its non-conference slate at the Brigham Young University Tournament this weekend in Utah. The Bobcats will open against BYU on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m., before facing Kansas, Friday at noon in Provo, and Utah Valley State, Saturday, Sept. 3 at noon in Orem. Both BYU and Kansas are receiving votes in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches poll.
TAKING A LOOK BACK: The Bobcats opened their 2005 season at the University of Washington Husky Challenge, last weekend in Seattle. MSU opened with a 3-2 win over Mountain West foe Wyoming. Redshirt freshman Laura Viren came off the bench to record a team and career-high 16 kills, while hitting .324 and adding nine digs, two aces and a block. Meggie Malyurek and Megan Zanto also hit double-digit kills with 15 and 12, respectively. Libero Kandice Kelly paced MSU defensively with a match-high 24 digs. MSU defeated Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon 3-0 for its second victory of the season. Kim Stonehouse paced the Bobcats with 13 kills, while Malyurek added 12 kills, a .417 attack mark and eight digs. MSU took its first loss against No. 2 Washington. The Huskies hit a blistering .556 from the floor, while holding the Bobcats to .165. Senior Megan Zanto had a good performance against one of the nation’s best squads, recording eight kills, a .467 attack mark and two blocks.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Brigham Young is 1-0 after dispelling Nevada 3-2 on August 27. The Cougars were paced in the win by Erica Lott with 18 kills, while Chelsea Goodman and Lindsy Hartsock added 13 and 11, respectively. Kansas is 2-0 after its first weekend of play. The Jayhawks defeated Alabama (3-0) and UMKC (3-0). KU was led by Josi Lima and Jana Correa, who averaged 4.67 and 4.33 kills, repectively. Setter Andi Rozum is dishing out 14 assists per game, while Jamie Mathewson leads the team with 3.50 digs per outing. Utah Valley State will open its season against Kansas on Friday night. Last season, the Wolverines posted an 11-16 overall mark.

Defending league-champion Sacramento State was tabbed first with 49 points, including seven first-place votes. The Hornets are followed by Eastern Washington 43, MSU 36, Portland State 29, Montana 22, Northern Arizona 22, Weber State 12, and Idaho State 11.
