Heberly, Joneses Lead the Way

Steve Heberly and Erin Jones earned Montana State Track and Field's Top Gun Awards for this spring's outdoor season, MSU coach Dale Kennedy announced Wednesday.
Heberly, a sprinter from Havre, and multi-event athlete Jones, from Harlowton, each won Big Sky titles in May. Heberly became the first Bobcat men's team sprinter in history to win a Big Sky championship, winning the 200. Jones claimed the league's heptathlon championship, and won Big Sky athlete of the meet honors for the second time. The Top Gun Award goes to the male and female athlete who scores the most points over the course of the outdoor season.
Heberly and Ty Norris, who joined forces to lead MSU to a 4 x 400 relay title, share the men's team's Outstanding Track performer award. Josh Henigman, a two-time regional qualifier who finished 14th in the NCAA Discus this year, won Outstanding Field Event Performer honors this year. Jesse Allen, who improved by eight feet in the shot put, Brad Benjamin, who posted six life bests this year, and Steve Hodge, who had eight life bests this year, shared Most Improved Athlete honors. Daniel Johnson won Outstanding Freshman honors.
Ashley Hadway won women's Outstanding Track Performer honors for finishing fourth in the 10,000 and second in the 5,000, posting four life bests this year. Erin Jones, Ashley Jones and Kim Berg won Outstanding Field Event honors. Ashley Jones set a school record in the hammer throw and finished 13th in the NCAA Championships, while Berg set a school record several times in the javelin, finishing 18th in the NCAA. Carrie Gottschalk and Lindsey Burrington shared Most Improved honors, while Elouise Rudy earned Outstanding Freshman honors.
