Montana State capped an outstanding 2004-05 sports season in impressive fashion Wednesday, earning the Sterling Bank Big Sky Conference President's Cup for the first time.
The Bobcats wrested the third annual Cup away from Weber State, which won the first two. MSU won the Cup on a tie-breaker with Northern Arizona for the award. The President's Cup is presented to the top athletic program in the Big Sky Conference based on a combination of athletic and academic performance.
"This is a great tribute to all of our student-athletes and coaches," said Montana State Athletic Director Peter Fields. "Everyone worked extremely hard in the classroom and in competition for this achievement, and it shows that our program is strong across the board in both areas. This is really an exciting accomplishment, one in which the entire University community and all Bobcat fans take pride."
Montana State dominated the athletic competition, winning the Big Sky Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy and scoring more men's and women's combined all-sports points than any other program in the league. Bobcat men's teams won two Big Sky crowns this year, winning the men's tennis title for the second straight year and the outdoor track championship for the first time in program history. MSU has won two of the last three Big Sky Men's All-Sports trophies.
The program's excellence extends to the classroom. Bobcat student-athletes compiled an average grade point average (GPA) of 3.08 for the 2004-05 academic year, and have posted a GPA of 3.0 or better for nine consecutive semesters. A total of 29 Bobcat All-Conference performers achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
In its third year of existence, the Sterling Bank Presidents Cup is moving for the first time, but competition for the Cup remains the same. Weber State possessed the Cup during the first two years of its existence, but the top three finishers in the Cup's three years remain unchanged. Weber State, Montana State and Northern Arizona remain the only three schools to finish in the top three of President's Cup competition.
The Sterling Savings Bank Presidents Cup is unique to collegiate athletics, reinforcing the Big Sky Conference’s dedication to the academic side of college athletics. Team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with a grade point average above 3.0 are used to determine the academic side.
Ten of Montana State’s 13 sports teams finished with a grade point average higher than 3.0. The women’s basketball team led the way with a 3.39, followed by the men’s cross country team at 3.35 and the women’s golf team at 3.3.
