Montana State Captures Presidents Cup

Montana State University and Northern Arizona University tied for the prestigious award, but Montana State claimed the 2004-05 trophy via a tiebreaker based on its relative overall standing.
“This is a great tribute to all of our student-athletes and coaches,’’ said Montana State Athletics Director Peter Fields. “Everyone worked extremely hard in the classroom and in competition for this achievement, and it shows that our program is strong across the board in both areas.”
Montana State finished first in the athletic competition, compiling an average of 11.3 points per sport. The Montana State men cruised to the Men’s All-Sports Trophy, averaging 14.5 points per sport.
Montana State also achieved in the classroom, compiling an average grade point average of 3.08. A total of 29 Bobcat All-Conference performers achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Northern Arizona, which finished second on the sports side, was second in the overall Presidents Cup standings.. Weber State, which won the first two Presidents Cups, finished third.
This is the third year of the Sterling Savings Bank Presidents Cup, which is unique to collegiate athletics in that it reinforces the Big Sky Conference’s dedication to the academic side of being student-athletes. Team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with a grade point average above 3.0 are used to determine the academic side.
Ten of Montana State’s 13 sports teams finished with a grade point average higher than 3.0. The women’s basketball team led the way with a 3.39, followed by the men’s cross country team at 3.35 and the women’s golf team at 3.3.
Montana State’s athletic season was highlighted by championships in men’s tennis and men’s outdoor track and field. The Bobcats placed second in men’s cross country and men’s basketball. The Bobcat women’s tennis team placed third, as did the volleyball team.
Athletic points are determined by regular-season standings for football, soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis. Finish in Big Sky Championships for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf also determine points.
“Congratulations are in order not for just Montana State, but for all of our member institutions,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. “The competition for this year’s Sterling Savings Bank Presidents Cup was fierce down to the end. For the first time, we had to use a tiebreaker formula to determine the winner. I’m extremely pleased with the play on the field this past season, but even more impressed by the academic excellence of Big Sky student-athletes.’’
Of the 104 teams who competed in athletic competition, 63 finished with an average GPA above 3.0. The Eastern Washington women’s soccer team accumulated a 3.608 GPA, highest in the league. The Northern Arizona women’s golf team achieved a 3.5. Eastern Washington was first overall on the academic side.
A total of 194 All-Conference athletes compiled a GPA of 3.0 or better. Five of the eight institutions finished with a combined GPA of higher than 3.0.
Prior to the inception of the Sterling Savings Bank President Cup, the Big Sky awarded a Combined All-Sports Trophy from 1988-2002. Montana State never won that award.
