Berg Works Into NCAA Contention

Kim Berg finished seventh in the women's javelin at the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Saturday, joining four other Bobcats waiting anxiously until Tuesday to learn whether they qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Berg's toss of 150-11 was good for seventh place. Competitors finishing in the top eight go into the pool become eligible for the NCAA Championships, with athletes chosen on the basis of their top mark of the season.
A sophomore two-time Big Sky Champion from Kremlin, Berg joins sophomore hammer thrower Ashley Jones (Harlowton), junior heptathlete Erin Jones (Harlowton), junior pole vaulter Elouise Rudy (Woodland Park, CO), and junior discus thrower Josh Henigman (Bridger) on the bubble. Jones appears to hold the strongest chance, as she is ranked 13th in the nation in the women's hammer throw, the only Bobcat in the top 20 nationally.
"Those five kids really did an outstanding job," Dale Kennedy said. "They performed well at this meet, particularly Elouise, who set a personal best."
Montana State's 4x400 men's relay team posted a school record for its second straight outing. Dan Johnson, Steve Heberly, Michael Novotny and Ty Norris combined to post a 3:11.07, a second better than their winning mark at the Big Sky Championships two weeks ago.
While Kennedy was excited for those top performers, he said the experience of the regional meet benefits all involved. "The best news is that we only lose Brad Sherer and Leif Arthun from the kids that got this far, and this exposure to a regional meet can only help. I'm excited for each of these kids for the future."
