Big Sky Champs!
The Montana State men's track and field squad took the sweetest victory lap in the program's history on Saturday, winning the school's first Big Sky men's track title ever, and the program's first in nearly seven decades. The Bobcats piled up an incredible 169 points, obliterating the field.
"It's amazing," said Montana State coach Dale Kennedy. "So many kids pulled together, we had school records, and an amazing number of PRs. This was a total team effort, and (assistant coaches) Mike Carignan, Tom Eitel and Lacy Hinzpeter get so much credit. They do a great job coaching their kids, they put their hearts and souls into it, and this is a tremendous payoff."
Montana State's women nearly helped the school pull an improbable double-title. The Bobcat women finished third, but made a tremendous rush at first. MSU's women scored 141.75 points, less than eight behind champion NAU and five behind Weber State.
Montana State's men were buoyed by an incredible day in the sprints. "Those kids were phenomenal," Kennedy said. "Ty Norris won the 400 with a school record 47.19, and Steve Heberly won the 200 at 21.43. Heberly got second in the 100, and Dan Johnson was third in the 200 and fifth in the 100. Michael Novotney was sixth in the 400.
As if that weren't enough, those four -- all Montanans -- combined to win the Big Sky 4x400 meter relay, capping a near-perfect championship meet.
"We lost some points along the way, but other teams helped us out," Kennedy said. "There were a lot of areas where schools took points away from Weber or NAU, and in the end we really stayed on our pace."
That proved to be enough to make history. "This school has never won a Big Sky men's track championship," Kennedy said. "Not in the 42 years we've been in the league. This is something very special."
