Bobcats Endure Highs, Lows on Day 3 of BSC Meet

Montana State's men and women take slim leads into the fourth and final day of the 2005 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Four Bobcats earned conference championships -- only one by a senior -- on Friday, set two school records, and posted 10 lifetime-best marks en route to the solid team performances.
Kim Berg, a soph. from Kremlin, won her second Big Sky javelin title in as many tries. Freshman Ellie Rudy (Woodland Park, CO) won the women's pole vault title. Thrower Josh Henigman (jr., Bridger) won the men's discus title, and senior Casey Jermyn (Plains) won the 10,000 meters.
"We had some outstanding individual performances," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "We stumbled a bit in spots in the men's race, but I think we're right on pace. Weber State has picked up some points and NAU is right on schedule, so I think the race for the men's title will be incredibly close (Saturday)."
MSU's women benefited from a strong performance in the throws. Berg's javelin title was her second, "amazing" for a sophomore, Kennedy said, while Hannah Furlong, Megan Lee and Christine Creveling finished 2-3-6. Rudy, Cassie Nollmeyer, and Brittany Speirs all each set life bests in the pole vault, with Rudy's mark a regional qualifying improvement.
Henigman won the discus and finished third in the hammer with a PR and school record toss of 209-4.
Kennedy was also pleased with how his athletes competed in trials of events that conclude on Saturday. Stevie Heberly set a school record at 21.38 in the 200 to finish as the fastest qualifier, while Ty Norris enters the 400 finals with the fastest qualifying time.
"If we can hold those marks from the qualifying round," Kennedy said, "the men are in pretty good shape to take a strong run at it on Saturday. We could accomplish a lot of neat things on the women's side, too. Whatever happens, Saturday should be exciting."
