Jones Grabs Big Sky Heptathlon Title

Erin Jones feels great. "Mentally," the Montana State junior said with a laugh after winning the Big Sky Conference Heptathlon Championship on Thursday.
"But my body hurts."
Jones earned the aches and pains, completing seven events in two days and posting four personal-best marks in four. "She was just terrific," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "Rock solid. If there was one soft spot it might have been the javelin, but she competed so well and really performed at a consistently high level."
The Harlowton native won her first outdoor title to go along with her 2004 indoor pentathlon title. Jones posted a first-day personal best on Wednesday. Her first day started well, she said, but she knew things were going her way when she put the shot over 37 feet, a two-foot PR.
"The hurdles went good enough (in the first event), I was right on pace," she said. "I knew if I could go 5-6 in the high jump I'd be in for a good multi. I've been struggling a little in the shot put, but we've started figuring things out in the last couple of weeks, and when I got it out there 37 feet I knew I really had a chance. Then I finished (Wednesday) with a PR in the 200. That was a great way to finish."
Wednesday was a long night, Jones said. "I was up all night, I was so excited to come here and compete (Thursday)." Jones attributed the fast start and positive mindset to her success over the two days. "When things don't go my way I can get upset and let if affect the next event. I think that mentality of just shaking things off, and then getting off to a good start, really helped."
Jones won't have long to enjoy the championship. She is entered in several events over the next two days of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, and knows that the physical wear and tear can pile up. "Icing is really all you can rely on," she said. "You got to bed (Thursday) night wondering what you'll feel like (Friday) morning."
Although she knows she'll be sore over the next couple days, for now it doesn't matter.
"It's a great feeling."
