Bring on the Aggies: MSU Men Ready for NCAA Tourney

For the second straight year, the Montana State men’s tennis team will participate in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships. The Bobcats made the 64-team field after capturing the Big Sky’s automatic bid two weeks ago with a 4-0 victory over Sacramento State.
Montana State (19-6), ranked No. 68 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will face No. 16 Texas A&M (15-8), Friday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. in Boise, Idaho. The other match played at the Appleton Tennis Center matches No. 31 Boise State (30-7) and No. 34 North Carolina (16-10). The winners will face each other on Saturday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. for a trip to the NCAA’s Sweet 16.
“We’ve been here before, so I don’t think we’ll be all that nervous,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “Texas A&M is a very good program. All we can do is go out and compete. You never know what might happen.”
Montana State is paced by junior Federico Ueltschi, the Big Sky Conference MVP, who posted an overall record of 35-8 and a 20-4 ledger at No. 1 singles. Also looking to contribute are 20-match winners Marek Gebicki and freshman Kyle McDonald. Both Gebicki and McDonald posted 25 victories in singles action.
Texas A&M finished the Big 12 season with a 6-3 mark and are led by two ranked players- No. 14 Jerry Makowski and No. 78 Ante Matijevic. The Aggies top doubles tandem of Matijevic and Brett Joelson are currently ranked No. 22.
Last spring, the Bobcats fell to No. 4 Southern Cal 4-0 in first-round NCAA action.
