Cats Look for Defensive Improvement

Do it again.
Those words, Mike Kramer says, comprise the most commonly-uttered phrase by Montana State's defensive coaching staff during the early days of the program's 2005 spring football session. And, they get to the heart of what Kramer and his staff are most trying to convey.
"We're going to do it until we get it right, particularly on defense," Kramer said Tuesday. "The (defensive) coaching staff is on top of it. We're emphasizing quality repetitions. The older linebackers are really the key right now, they know what is expected of them."
Kramer has emphasized re-instilling an attack-first, aggressive attitude in his squad's defense throughout the off-season, and Bobcat defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski said his unit has made strides this spring. "I like the attitude so far," Kwiatkowski said. "We talk about no excuses, about being positive. We have to do a better job breaking down and running to the football."
Kwiatkowski said that remains an emphasis this spring. "We need to be more relentless, more physically tough. Those are the things we're demanding this spring."
Kramer said his first serious evaluation is Saturday, when the team scrimmages in The Triangle Classic at Great Falls High's Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 1 pm. "We'll see where we're at when we start tackling and blocking and going at full tilt," Kramer said. "Saturday is our first full scrimmage, and it's important for us to get a good reading of where we are right now."

Injury troubles that hounded the Bobcats in the off-season continue to linger. Sophomore tight end Elliott Barnhart will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery next spring, and is lost for the spring.

Kramer is looking forward to Saturday's scrimmage in Great Falls. "That's a great weekend for us," he said. "It's important to put on a good show there for our great fans in Great Falls and the Triangle area, which flock to the Stadium."
Tickets remain for both the game, which is Saturday, and the Friday night banquet.
