Men's Long Relay Sets School Record in Oregon

Montana State battled the elements all day at the Oregon Invitational, and in the end the team's 4x400 men's relay struck like lightning. Dan Johnson, Steve Heberly, Michael Novotny and Ty Norris combined to set a school record of 3:12.64, less than three seconds from an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying mark.
"That was a really impressive performance," said Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy, whose team competed most of the day in rain and stormy conditions. "The weather played havoc on the field events kids, especially during the day session. But I was thrilled for those kids on the relay. They came here with a mission, and they got it done."
Johnson ran a 49.0 split on the lead leg. Heberly answered with a 47.9, followed by Novotny's 48.5 and Norris' anchor leg of 47.4. "It's fun to look at those splits, because those kids really strung together some outstanding performances."
Josh Henigman improved his regional qualifying mark in the discus with a mark of 176-0, a personal best. Jonathan Gibson ran his second-best steeplechase ever, an 8:59 that improves his regional qualifying mark.
Kennedy said that while the weather conditions limited outstanding marks in the throwing events, MSU's throwers were competitive. "Our throwers were very competitive, but the weather really held marks down," he said.
