Binford named Cal Poly assistant Amy Saneholtz, Katie Miller from the Utah State staff, and Boise-area prep and youth coach Tim Hays as Montana State assistant women's basketball coaches on Friday, rounding out her staff. The three begin their duties in May.
"I feel very excited about the new staff,” Binford said. “They are all solid individuals with all-around attributes. I believe we have covered all the areas for us to be successful. Each coach is unique and different, and will add to the strength of the program.”
A seven-year assistant, Saneholtz has served in a wide range of administrative and on-court roles at Cal Poly, most recently serving as lead assistant, recruiting coordinator and post coach for the Mustangs. A 1997 graduate of Washington State University, Saneholtz played four seasons with the Cougars, where she averaged 12 points and five rebounds as a senior. She finished 15th in school history in scoring and fifth in field goal percentage. The Pullman, Wash., native established a school-record 22 rebounds against Arizona State, which stands as the third highest single-game total in the history of the Pacific-10 Conference. In addition, she holds the WSU mark for single-game field-goal percentage by hitting a perfect ten-of-ten against Stanford.
"Amy brings a long background in Division I, especially in recruiting,” Binford said. “She is very familiar with the Northwest and knows what it takes to get a student-athlete to a great academic school like Montana State. She is also a great post coach, which was an area we needed to address.”
A former all-conference player at Northern Iowa, Miller fulfilled a vast array of duties at Utah State for the past two seasons, including scouting and game tape breakdown. Miller was an All-Missouri Valley Conference player in 2003, finishing second in the league in scoring at 18.2 points a game. She was also tabbed Missouri Valley Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. Miller earned UNI's Purple and Old Gold Award for academic and athletic achievement as a senior, and finished first in school history in free throw percentage (82.4%) and free throws made (411), second in games played (116), and fifth in scoring (1,343). Miller was an Academic All-American as a senior. She was active in the Cedar Falls community while in school, helping with the Adolescent Diabetes Foundation, Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, and the Missouri Valley's "Just Read" program.
"Katie’s greatest asset is her ability to build relationships and care for the well-being of the student-athletes,” Binford said. “She was a great player and knows what it takes to be successful at the highest level. Katie is a go-getter, and has shown me during her time at Utah State to be very organized and able to handle a variety of responsibilities.”
Hays, who played two years at Boise State before finishing his career at Northwest Nazarene, has coached several high school, middle school, and club teams in Boise. He finished second in three-point percentage in NCAA Division II as a senior at Northwest Nazarene, and was a standout at LaGrande, Ore., High School and at Air Force Prep before beginning his collegiate career.
"Tim is one of the best fundamental coaches I know,” Binford said. “He was instrumental in training me for the WNBA and is an outstanding teacher. He will help solidify the entire staff.”
