Dale Kennedy extended his in-state recruiting success on Thursday, adding three Montana prep standouts to Montana State's sprints/hurdles crew.
Toni Qunell of Geraldine and Autumn Domitrovich of Anaconda join the women's squad, while Helena Capital's Scott Peterson joins the men's team. The three bring a combined seven state championships to Bozeman before completing their senior seasons.
"Autumn and Toni really give us some young talent in that women's sprints and hurdles group," Kennedy said. "They'll add depth right away, but we think they really give us a great long-term base of talent. Scott also joins a sprints-hurdles group that is establishing itself in our conference. That has a chance to really be a strength for us in the upcoming years."
Qunell won five events at last year's Class C State Championship, lifting Geraldine to the state crown. She won the 100, 200, 400, 100 hurdles, and 300 hurdles, and Kennedy is enthused about her potential as a hurdler. "Her best event at this level might be the hurdles," he said. "She has potential that could reach the regional and national level." Qunell's best marks are: 100 - 12.28; 200 - 26.09; 400 - 59.29; 100 hurdles - 15.24; and 300 hurdles - 44.94. "Toni's versatility is really important," Kennedy said. "You can't underestimate having kids that help you at that many events." She maintains a 4.0 grade point average (out of 4.0), according to Kennedy.
Domitrovich, a two-time team captain in basketball, won state A titles in the 100 and 200 last year, and finished second in the 400. She has posted best marks of 12.31 in the 100, 25.90 in the 200, and 59.7 in the 400. "Autumn really gives us quality depth right away in the sprints, and joins our young athletes that are freshmen and sophomores now to give us a strong core of developmental talent. That group has a lot of promise, and I'm really excited, with the addition of Autumn and Toni, about what we could accomplish in the relays."
Peterson was third in the AA 300 hurdles last year, with a best mark of 39.16. He brings a wealth of athletic ability to the MSU program, earning three letters each in track and football at Capital. He was an All-State Academic choice twice in football, three times in track. "I really see Scott with great potential in the 400 hurdles outdoors, and he will also help us in the 400 indoors. That kind of versatility also spells relay duty, and adds to a strong group of quarter-milers."
Kennedy expects to land several more student-athletes during the spring recruiting period.
