Track Team Hosts Invite Saturday

Montana State hosts its first outdoor meet of 2005 when Montana, Dickinson State and Mary visit the MSU Track and Field Complex for the MSU Invitational. Field events begin at 11 am, with the running events getting underway at 12 noon. Dickinson State is the defending NAIA National Championship men’s track and field team.

This Week
Montana State hosts the first of its two home meets this weekend, battling a strong regional field at the MSU Track and Field Complex. Competitors from Montana, Dickinson State, and the University of Mary join Bobcat student-athletes. Dickinson State’s men won the NAIA National Championship last year, and Dale Kennedy said he expects “fireworks in those sprints. Dickinson State went 1-2-3 in the championship meet, and they have some talented runners.”
Athlete of the Week
Sophomore javelin thrower Kim Berg joins Josh Henigman as MSU’s outdoor track athlete of the week honorees. Berg won the honor this week for 158-1 javelin throw mark last week at Weber State. Berg is second in the Big Sky and eighth in the NCAA Midwest Region on the strength of that throw. Henigman, a junior from Bridger, earned Big Sky Field Event Athlete of the Week honors for March 29.
Regionalism
Several Bobcats stand well in the regional rankings: Josh Henigman-6th, javelin, 9th, discus; Hannah Furlong-8th, shot put ; Kim Berg-8th, javelin; Tanner Rauk-11th, shot put; Kelli Phillip-16th, javelin.
Historic Throws
A pair of MSU throwers have climbed the school’s record lists this year. Berg’s 158-1 in the javelin is second in MSU history, while Henigman’s 174-9 discus mark is the fourth-best in school history.
Leading the Way
A half-dozen Bobcat track and field athletes currently lead the Big Sky’s best marks lists. MSU’s men’s leaders are: Steve Heberly, so, 200 (21.38); Jonathan Gibson, sr, steeplechase, (9:06.95); Thomas Seely, so, pole vault (15-2); Josh Henigman, sr, discus (174-9); Brad Benjamin, sr, decathlon (6604). Women’s leaders: Elisabeth Driscoll, fr, 5000 (17:35.57aa); Hannah Furlong, jr, shot (47-5).

“Our throwers typically go crazy at this meet, and those kids have had such a great spring to this point that I’m really excited to see what those kids can do. They’re in their own circle and their own environment, and they really tend to light it up. I expect that to happen again. It looks like we’re still going in the right direction in terms of improvement. We had 10 new Big Sky qualifiers last week and three new regional qualifiers last weekend in Ogden in spite of some challenging weather. I thought the jumps crew had a better meet last week than in the duals the week before, and I hope they can build on that this weekend. We’ll be a little short on the distance side this week, with both Kevin Clary and Casey Jermyn running at Mt. SAC. They’ll be chasing NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the 5,000. Jonathan Gibson and Josh Ricardi are both taking the engineering certification exam on Saturday, so it looks like we’ll be without them. Tony Bachmann is sick and Ja’Ron Jefferson has some tendonitis, so they won’t compete this weekend. This is a major meet for us because we have so few kids that travel to Oregon so we need to continue our momentum. I’m looking forward to this weekend.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 24th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.
