Bobcat Golfers Head to Big Sky Meet

MSU closes its 2005 season Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Goodyear, AZ. The tourney is at the same site as last month’s Bobcat Desert Classic, MSU’s best outing of the year.

Full Squad
Montana State’s full squad has been in place since the beginning of the spring semester. Junior Kristina Kurcinka missed the fall while studying abroad, but she joins freshmen Kelly Gillum and Stephanie Simmons, junior Kylie Anderson, and senior Erica Leslie in the Bobcat lineup.
In Arizona
Montana State broke out with one of its best tournaments ever on March 7-9, finishing tied for third at the Bobcat Desert Classic in the Phoenix area. Bobcat players notched only two rounds higher than 80, and the entire final two rounds were below that figure. Kelly Gillum finished tied for ninth. MSU was 17th of 18 at the East-West Challenge at Rio Verde.
In California
The Bobcats finished 11th out of 14 teams at the Fresno State Invitational, then finished 15th of 15 at the Peg Barnhard Collegiate at Stanford. Coupled with the two previous meets in Arizona, MSU’s trip to California closed the 2004-05 regular season.

Montana State plays the Big Sky Championships at its ‘home away from home’ course, the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz., where the Bobcats host a tournament each spring... MSU’s best outing of the season came at Palm Valley in March, when the Bobcats finished third in the 19-team Bobcat Desert Classic... Montana State has finished either fifth or sixth at the last five Big Sky meets, and haven’t finished in the top three since 1996.
Individual Notes
Freshman Kelly Gillum played 12 of her first 17 rounds as a Bobcat in the 70s, but has been at or over 80 in her last five straight... Kristina Kurcinka averaged 79.5 in her first six rounds of the spring, her first collegiate golf of the season since she spent the fall semester studying in New Zealand, but has averaged 86.8 in her last five rounds... Kylie Anderson’s rounds of 72 and 73 at the Bobcat Desert Classic are Montana State’s best two rounds of the 2004-05 season (along with Kelly Gillum’s 73 last fall at Eastern Washington)... Montana State’s lone senior Erica Leslie is fresh off her best showing of the season, and 81-78/159 effort at Stanford last week... that tourney was the first time Leslie led the team this season... Kelly Gillum was MSU’s leading player in five of the team’s first six tourneys, but has not led the Bobcats in the last two outings.

Brittany Basye, a former state champion at Billings Central and WAC Champion at New Mexico, is in her third season as MSU head coach. She was Dan Davies’ assistant for three seasons. Basye was WAC Player of the Year in ‘94, was ranked 17th nationally at one point, and qualified for ‘95 U.S. Open.

“We’re excited to get back on the course. I don’t think anyone was happy with how we played in California, and the girls are excited to get back into it. Erica Leslie played well last weekend, and, as our only senior, I hope she can finish strong next week in her last meet. I’m extremely confident in this team. Everyone going to the Big Sky meet has the ability to score very low, and if we can put it together for three rounds we have as good a chance as anyone in the conference to win. We’re very comfortable on this course, and I think our confidence level is high. This has been a good season for our young players to grow and gain experience while they’re contributing. I’m looking forward to putting together one solid week of golf.”
