ABOUT THE BOBCATS
Montana State makes its final regular season road trip next week, heading to California for a pair of meets against strong west coast fields. The Bobcats play in the Fresno State and Stanford Invitationals in the span of one week.
COMINGS AND GOINGS
Full Squad
Montana State’s full squad has been in place since the beginning of the spring semester. Junior Kristina Kurcinka missed the fall while studying abroad, but she joins freshmen Kelly Gillum and Stephanie Simmons, junior Kylie Anderson, and senior Erica Leslie in the Bobcat lineup.
In Arizona
Montana State broke out with one of its best tournaments ever on March 7-9, finishing tied for third at the Bobcat Desert Classic in the Phoenix area. Bobcat players notched only two rounds higher than 80, and the entire final two rounds were below that figure. Kelly Gillum finished tied for ninth.
In California
MSU faces most of the west coast golf programs at either Fresno or Stanford. The inaugural Fresno State Invitational is at the 6,219 yard, par 72 Riverbend Golf Course in Madera. The Stanford Invitational is at the 6,168 yard par 72 Stanford golf course.

Montana State’s third-place finish and three-round 912 at the Bobcat Desert Classic March 8-9 were each the program’s best-ever efforts at that event... MSU’s three rounds under 310 in Goodyear are the team’s only three sub-310 rounds this year... the Fresno State Invitational is an inaugural event... MSU has played at Stanford the past few seasons.
Individual Notes
Two Bobcats -- Kelly Gillum and Kristina Kurcinka -- scored in the 70s in all three rounds at the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Ariz., March 7-9... all five of MSU’s players scored in the 70s at least once... Kylie Anderson’s opening round 72 in Goodyear marked MSU’s first par round of the season... Gillum played five straight rounds in the 70s to begin the season -- and her career -- last fall... Gillum’s lead for low-player honors is one stroke over Anderson and two strokes over Kurcinka... Kurcinka and Leslie each fired rounds of 79 in the 36-hole Stanford event last year... Anderson is the only other current Bobcat that has played for MSU at Stanford.

Brittany Basye, a former state champion at Billings Central and WAC Champion at New Mexico, is in her third season as MSU head coach. She was Dan Davies’ assistant for three seasons. Basye was WAC Player of the Year in ‘94, was ranked 17th nationally at one point, and qualified for ‘95 U.S. Open.

“We are definitely ready to play again. We had a good week of practice, and the team is enthusiastic about building on what we started in the Bobcat Classic, the team score we put together there. The ladies are focused on improving their individual games, but also understand the importance of playing as a team and pulling for each other. That makes the whole process fun. The players are pushing each other and competing with each other. Those are important factors in developing a program, and I’m happy to see it. I think this team has a chance to really develop and progress in the last two meets of the season heading into the Big Sky Championships, and I’m excited to see what they can accomplish.”
