Bobcat Track Squad Heads to Missoula

Montana State’s full squad heads to a single meet for the first time this outdoor season on Saturday, as the Bobcats face Eastern Washington, Idaho State, and Montana at Missoula’s Al Manuel Duals. The young season’s second week offers challenges and opportunity for the ‘Cats, who face the defending indoor champ (ISU men) and several conference contenders.

This Week
This week’s Al Manuel field in Missoula represents half of the Big Sky Conference, with the ‘Cats battling Montana, Eastern Washington and Idaho State. The meet will be scored as men’s and women’s duals between all four schools present. Idaho State won the Big Sky men’s indoor crown. Field events begin at 10:45 am, while the running events start at 11:15 am, although the hammer throw is Friday afternoon.
Athlete of the Week
Montana State’s Josh Henigman, a junior from Bridger, earned Big Sky Field Event Athlete of the Week honors. Henigman qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the discus and the hammer throw at the Stanford Invitational last week. He now leads the league in the discus and is second in the hammer.
Regionalism
Several Big Sky Conference student-athletes earned NCAA Regional Qualifying marks last weekend, with MSU leading the way. Three Bobcats earned regional marks last weekend. Josh Henigman qualified in the discus and hammer throw, Jonathan Gibson qualified in the 3,000 m steeplechase, and Kim Berg in the javelin. Gibson’s and Henigman’s marks came at Stanford.
Leading the Way
A half-dozen Bobcat track and field athletes lead the Big Sky’s best marks lists after two weeks (for most schools) of competition. On the men’s side, MSU’s leaders are: Jonathan Gibson, steeplechase (9:06.95); Thomas Seely, pole vault (15-1.5); Josh Henigman, discus (173-7); Brad Benjamin, decathlon (6604). Bobcat women’s leaders are: Megan Lee, shot put (45-1.75); Ashley Jones, hammer throw (174-6).

“This should be a great track meet. We’re introducing the element of team scoring into the equation, which I am excited about. I think our sport needs to foster this kind of excitement. We’ll also keep our eye on qualifying for the Big Sky and NCAA Regional meets. We don’t keep this kind of record, but I don’t ever remember an openeing weekend when we had 21 kids qualify for the conference meet. We sent 11 kids to Stanford, and that helped, because each of them earned conference marks and a couple of regional marks, also. We’ll have to deal with the weather element during the outdoor season, that’s part of it, and you never know how kids are going to respond. There’s a possibility we won’t be able to cover the men’s distance events because of the some injuries and illnesses, but we should be ready to go on the women’s side. Idaho State is fresh off an indoor championship, so they have marked themselves as the team to beat. Eastern Washington really has an outstanding team, also, and Montana is always competitive, although they are redshirting some distance kids. The women’s meet should be extremely competitive, as well.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 24th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.

In his 22nd year at MSU... has coached 45 athletes to all-Big Sky honors... MSU’s throwers led the Big Sky in points in 2002 and ‘03... MSU became the first Big Sky school in history to hold the top five spots in one event during the 2004 Big Sky Indoor women’s shot put competition.
