The Big Sky Conference’s most storied rivalry takes center stage on Sunday afternoon, as third-place Montana visits the second-place Bobcats at 2 pm. Both teams won on their home courts last weekend, and remain in hot pursuit of league-leading Portland State. Montana is the possibly most dangerous Big Sky team, having destroyed Weber State and Idaho State at home last weekend. The team has won three straight games, and is 4-1 since Kamar Davis’ return.

Kamar Davis is back and he’s doing a good job blending in, but he is definitely a focal point. With him back they have a real good inside-outside attack. (Matt) Martin is playing really well, Kevin Criswell is always dangerous, Seyfert had a big game against us last time, and Matt Dlouhy is a very good player. They are really tough to guard, and they play very solid defensively.” On the Big Sky race: “There was a little separation last weekend. I really didn’t expect it to be like this, with Eastern Washington in the middle and Weber State down near the bottom of the standings. Portland State and Montana were the two teams, with Eastern Washington, picked at the top in most polls, so to see them up there isn’t much of a surprise. I’m happy that we have been able to crash the party so far.” On the Bobcats: “Last weekend was another important weekend. Just to be able to hold serve at home, especially coming off two losses. NOTING THE GRIZZLIES
Montana is an outstanding defensive squad, leading the league in three-point defense and standing second in field goal defense... the Grizzlies are also second in the Big Sky in rebound margin... UM is 4-1 since the return of Kamar Davis, and the senior forward has averaged 21.5 points in the last four games... junior guard Kevin Criswell recently became the 21st Grizzly to score 1,000 points, and seems destined for the school’s top 10, where he would join his head coach, Larry Krystkowiak, UM’s all-time scoring leader, and assistant coach Wayne Tinkle, who is fourth in school history
Last Time Out
For the second straight game, Montana State overcame a sluggish first half to record a season sweep against a long-time Big Sky rival. MSU outrebounded Weber State 42-to-31 and held the Wildcats to 39% shooting in a 78-65 win. The win gives MSU its second sweep of Weber in four seasons.
Three After Three
MSU has hit at least one three-pointer in the last 323 games. From 1986 to late ‘92-93 MSU rolled up 197 straight games with a trey, giving MSU at least one three in 520 of the last 521 games.
The Three Company
This year’s Bobcat team has not been afraid to cast away from three-point range. MSU has hit 7.5 treys a game, just behind NAU’s 7.6 a game, and has attempted 504 three-pointers, also the most in the conference. MSU tied school records by hitting 14 and attempting 35 three-pointers against Wyoming.
The Magic Number
The Bobcats are 106-15 when scoring at least 80 points since ‘93-94.
Rebounding Remarks
Montana State has struggled in rebounding most of the season, but it appears that the team is making headway. MSU has moved up to sixth in the Big Sky in rebound margin (-2.9, ahead of Sac State and Idaho State), largely on the strength of a solid performance last weekend. MSU outrebounded ISU 41-to-25 and league-leader Weber State 42-to-31.
Rebounding Redux
It’s true that the Bobcats outrebounded only one of its first seven Big Sky opponents. However, MSU has been even or positive in rebound margin in five of the nine league games, and are virtually even in rebounding in home games. Window Cleaner Marvin Moss has been MSU’s rebounding bright spot. The junior forward averages 7.2 a game, third in the Big Sky.

Montana State’s league-opening road sweep was a significant event, marking the team’s first road sweep in three years. It was Mick Durham’s sixth road sweep.
