THIS WEEK’S ACTION
Montana State heads to the road for the only time in the indoor regular season on Friday and Saturday, competing in Idaho State’s Mountain States Games at Holt Arena. Multi-event competition begins at 12 noon Friday and 9:30 am Saturday. Open and Invitational competition opens on Friday at 1 pm, with Saturday’s events beginning at 9:30.

Montana State competes in one of the Rocky Mountain region’s top events this weekend, the Mountain State Games at Pocatello’s Holt Arena. MSU athletes compete against BYU, Utah and Southern Utah, along with Big Sky rivals Idaho State, Weber State, Sacramento State and Montana.
League Leaders
A pair of Bobcats continue to lead the Big Sky in their respective events. Thomas Seely’s 16-0 mark in the pole vault is the league’s top vault this year, while Carra Greyn is first in the weight throw (56-10.75). Greyn is also third in the shot put, while Lynn Craver (second) and Megan Lee (third) are two-three in the weight throw. Men’s team competitors in the top three of their events include Kevin Clary (2nd, 3,000), Jesse Allen (3rd, shot put), and Brad Sherer (2nd, weight throw).
Weighty Matters
A year after finishing 1st-through-5th in the women’s weight throw at the Big Sky indoor meet, MSU is up to its old tricks. Lynn Craver, Carra Greyn and Megan Lee hold down the first three spots in the Big Sky weight throw standings. Ashley Jones is 9th and Lisa Kilgore 12th this week, as well.

Of the 17 different Bobcats that occupy spots in the top five of the Big Sky leaderboards this week, four are seniors, six are juniors, and seven are sophomores.
Vaunted Vaulter
Thomas Seely appears ready to grab the mantle of MSU’s next outstanding pole vaulter. A sophomore, Seely’s best jump of 16-0 leads the Big Sky and ties him for 10th on MSU’s all-time top 10.

“This meet is a highlight of our season ever year, and it’s an important meet for us. The one thing I really like is that the meet is a pretty good rehearsal for the Big Sky Championships. Most of the kids compete on Friday, then turn around and compete again Saturday. It’s a bonus this year that the Big Sky meet is in Pocatello, so our kids get to familiarize themselves with not only the format but with the facility. This is a real typical Mountain States Games in that nine teams will be there, including four Big Sky teams, and I expect the competition will be excellent. We’re moving away from the team scoring competition for a week, so kids will have the opportunity to focus on hitting qualifying times or moving up in the top 12. It’s a funny year in that there aren’t a lot of kids in any of the events on either side that have qualifying marks. We hit the halfway point of our indoor season this week, where a lot of teams hit that point last week, so I still expect to see a lot of improvement this week and in the next couple of weeks. Typically kids are at their best in the fourth or fifth competition, and that’s still a couple weeks away for us.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 24th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.

Montana State’s women rode the tide of a near-sweep in the field events while Jonathan Gibson’s victory in the 3,000 meters led the Bobcat men as MSU scored dual meet victories over Montana in Bozeman on Friday. “It was a great team effort by our men and women tonight,” said Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy. “The great thing about track and field is that every kid in the program can play a role, and we experienced that tonight.” Sprinter/jumper Kelsey Kirkpatrick won three events to lead MSU’s women, while sprinter Torey Schaefer won two. Kirkpatrick, a sophomore from Ryegate, won the 55 hurdles and the long and triple jumps. Schaefer, a freshman from Billings, won the collegiate 55 and 200 meter races. The ‘Cats won 10 of the 14 women’s events. “We used Kelsey Kirkpatrick all over the place, and that was really a key,” Kennedy said. “We really leaned on her tonight. Torey Schaefer was solid in the sprints, and the throwers were very good again.” Bobcat runners won all five running events longer than the 55 meters, and swept the throwing events. Gibson’s win in the 3,000 led the way on the track, while MSU swept the throwing events. Montana’s Jas Gill won the high jump and long jump, while Trevor Gunlock won the pole vault and long jump for the Grizzlies. “I really thought Kevin Clary ran a nice mile, and it’s great to see Jonathan Gibson get rewarded with a win in the 3,000,” Kennedy said.
Double Double-Dippin’
Montana State has developed what appears to be two pairs of formidable distance duos. Junior Ashley Hadway and senior Mayra Morgadostand fourth and fifth, respectively, on the league’s 3000 list. Hadway is also seventh in the mile. “Those two are very experienced,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. Joining the two veterans are freshmen Carrie Gottschalk and Kayla Laarson, who are 12th and 13th. “Those two young kids, it will be fun to watch them develop as this year and future years go by,” Kennedy said.
Young Guns
On the men’s side, Montana State is developing what could become one of the top sprint groups in school history. Sophomore Steve Heberly (Havre) was an All-Big Sky performer in the 200 last year, and is currently 5th in that event and 8th in the 400 in the Big Sky. Dan Johnson (fr., Livingston), is 8th in the 55 and 12th in the 200. Sophomore Ty Norris of Bozeman is 4th in the 400, while junior Michael Novotny (Big Timber) is 10th in the 400. Freshman Greg Smith (Helena) is 11th in the 800.
Rivalry Revisited
Montana has topped the Bobcat women in the Big Sky meet only once in the past 13 years (2002 in Missoula). The two teams tied in Missoula in 1994. Montana’s women haven’t finished ahead of the Bobcat women at a league championship meet outside of Missoula since 1989. MSU has been similarly dominant on the men’s side, finishing ahead of the Grizzlies in 14 of the past 16 Big Sky men’s track meets.
