Denver Leads NCAA Western Regional after Opening Day, MSU Sits Sixth

Behind the strong skiing of the women’s giant slalom squad, the Montana State ski team sits sixth after the opening day of the 2005 NCAA Western Region Championships.
The University of Denver notched 293 points on opening day, followed by New Mexico 259.5, Alaska-Anchorage 245.5, Colorado 226.5, Utah 212, Montana State 185, Nevada 144, Western State 112.5, Whitman 100 and Boise State 35.
The Bobcats were paced by junior standout Alex Munteanu in the giant slalom. Munteanu recorded her highest finish of the year, placing fourth overall in a two-run time of 1:41.94. Florence Roujas of Denver won the event in a time of 1:39.46.
Munteanu was followed in the giant slalom by teammates Chi Chi Williams, 13th, 1:43.94; Smaranda Munteanu, 14th, 1:44.28; Crystal Wright, 19th, 1:46.17; and Andrea Drew, 26th, 1:48.71.
The MSU men’s giant slalom team was paced by Dan McKay, 19th, 1:30.35. Also contributing for the Bobcats were Don Brockett, 20th, 1:30.56; Tyler Smedsrud, 22nd, 1:30.82, Cory Harris, 23rd, 1:30.88; and Crister Kjos, 24th, 1:30.91.
Petter Roering of New Mexico won the men’s giant slalom crown in a time of 1:27.71.
In nordic action, the Bobcats received its best performance from Mandy Bowden, who finished ninth overall in a time of 17:37.0 in the classic race.
Also contributing for MSU in the five-kilometer event was Emily Robins, 14th, 17:44.1; Karoline Teien, 17th, 17:59.4; Frasier Opel, 27th, 18:27.9; and Rachel Goldstein, 31st, 18:44.0.
Marina Stursova of New Mexico claimed the NCAA Western Regional classic title, covering the five-kilometer course in 16:21.4.
The Bobcat men’s nordic team was led by Mark Iverson, who placed 19th overall in a time of 31:54.0. He was followed by Christian Coe, 23rd, 32:36.3; Jackson Harris, 29th, 32:47.7; Nathan Park, 35th, 34:00.5; and Ryan Holtan, 37th, 34:23.0.
Denver’s Rene Reisshauer won the men’s individual crown in a time of 29:04.5.
The NCAA Western Regional concludes Saturday at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch.
