This Week
Montana State travels to Pocatello’s Holt Arena this weekend for the final major team event of the 2005 indoor track and field season, the Big Sky Conference Championships. MSU and the seven other league teams compete all day Friday and Saturday, beginning with multi-event competition at 9 am each day. (See page 2 for full schedule of events.)
Athletes of the Week
Montana State’s Kevin Clary and Lynn Craver closed the regular season with a bang, each earning Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors. Clary’s award came for his effort in the 3000m, an honor he shares with Weber State’s Tim Flint. Craver earns her second award of the season for winning the weight throw at the Bobcat Open. MSU finishes the 2005 indoor season with two women’s awards, both by Craver, and Clary’s men’s award.
Weighty Matters
A year after finishing 1st-through-5th in the women’s weight throw at the Big Sky indoor meet, MSU is up to its old tricks. Four Bobcat athletes hold down the top spots on the Big Sky women’s weight throw list entering the league championship meet -- Lynn Craver (1st, 58-7.5), Megan Lee (2nd, 57-5), Carra Greyn (3rd, 56-10.75), and Ashley Jones (4th, 55-11.75). In addition, Lise Kilgore enters the meet seeded 12th (50-9.5).
Youth Served Here
Montana State’s men and women both bring young squads to the Big Sky Championships this weekend. Of the 23 MSU men’s entries, 19 are undergraduates (six juniors, six sophomores, seven freshmen). Of Montana State’s 20 women’s entries, 18 are undergrads (five juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen). In all, 37 of the 43 Bobcat entries into this week’s Big Sky meet are underclassmen.
Last Week
Montana State’s men’s team qualified six more for the Big Sky Championships, led by Michael Novotney’s second place finish in the 400 (49.30), while one new women’s qualifier emerged. Kevin Clary won the 3000 with a mark of 8:16.73 adjusted, which sends him to the top of the Big Sky Conference chart. Lynn Craver won the women’s weight throw with a toss of 58-7.5, also the newly-minted best mark in the Big Sky Conference. In all, Bobcat athletes captured six women’s and six men’s events at the Bobcat Open. Torey Schaefer (55, 400) and John Voegel (triple jump, long jump) stood as double-winners on the night. “We had seven new qualifiers for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which was great,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. “Hopefully we come out of this meet with a lot of momentum both individually and collectively, and I think we could be a little bit of a surprise at the Big Sky meet.”
Back in Business
Senior distance runner Casey Jermyn is returning to the scene of past glories, the Big Sky Conference Championships. Jermyn was a double-winner in Bozeman last year, claiming titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races. He joins Steve Heberly (200) and Tanner Rauk (shot put) as returning all-conference performers. Megan Lee (shot put) and Lynn Craver (weight throw) are returning all-leaguers on the women’s side.

Vaunted Vaulting
Thomas Seely appears ready to grab the mantle of MSU’s next outstanding pole vaulter. A sophomore, Seely’s best jump of 16-0.75 leads the Big Sky and ties him for 10th on MSU’s all-time top 10. The pole vault holds some point potential for the men’s team this year. In addition to Seely, Steven Hodge is 3rd in the Big Sky rankings, and Andrew Wharton 6th.

DALE KENNEDY QUOTES
“We’re a little bit short-handed on the women’s side. We just don’t have the firepower that we’ve had in the past with some of our outstanding people redshirting. It looks like Weber State, Idaho State and Northern Arizona are headed for a knock-down, drag-out for the women’s championship. If you score it out on paper, we would figure to finish about sixth. I think our best performances are still ahead of us, we’re still improving across the board on both sides every meet. On the men’s side, we have 23 athletes in 35 event entries, which gives us a stronger, deeper team than on the women’s side. We need to maximize our performance in the distance events, where we have a lot of experience, and in the throws and jumps. Experience is such an important factor at a meet like this. It’s hard to replicate the atmosphere and the intensity at a regular season meet, so you have to lean on athletes that have been through a championship meet. Kids don’t need to do things they’re not capable of doing in this meet, they just need to perform near their season’s best level. I think both teams can compete for the upper division, and that would be a good achievement on either side.”
