Bobcats Host NCAA Western Regional Ski Championships

Competition will actually start on Thursday, Feb. 24 as a make-up qualifier, which was part of the University of New Mexico Invitational, will be contested in the men’s giant slalom and the women’s slalom. The Bobcats are currently sitting fifth in the UNM Invite.
“The make up qualifier will give everyone a good look at the alpine venue,” said MSU director of skiing. “Then the regional gets going full speed on Friday. It’s going to be great skiing on our home courses.”
Competing in the NCAA Western Region Championships will be squads from MSU, Colorado, Denver, Utah, New Mexico, Western State, Nevada, Whitman, Boise State, and Alaska-Anchorage.
The regional championship will serve as the final chance for skiers to qualify for the NCAA Skiing Championships, March 9-12 hosted by the University of Vermont.
Friday’s races will begin with the men’s and women’s giant slalom and the women’s five-kilometer and men’s ten-kilometer nordic events. The slalom races and the nordic freestyle events will take place on Saturday.
“We have some kids that are firmly set to qualify for the NCAAs,” Brelsford said. “We also have some kids on the bubble, so this is the time to go all out and get a great finish.”
Last season, Montana State qualified two alpine skiers and two nordic racers for the NCAA Championships. According to Brelsford, four alpine skiers have qualified, as well as three nordic competitors for the national championships.
