Northern Arizona Women Chop Down ‘Cats

Montana State (7-15, 1-8) held a 61-57 advantage on a Whitney Connolly basket, but the Lumberjacks’ Natalie Metz got the hot hand and knocked down six points during the spurt to lift NAU to the win.
“I thought we gave a great effort, but couldn’t make a shot when it counted,” said MSU head coach Greg Kudrna. “We just didn’t get into any kind of flow. Both teams played great defense and every shot was contested.”
MSU took an early lead on a Scotta Morton three-pointer, before Northern Arizona (15-8, 6-4) fought back for a three-point lead following a pair of Alyssa Wahl free throws. The Bobcats regained the lead on an Alyssa Nelson trey and built its largest margin at 17-10 on another Nelson basket.
Montana State held a 35-30 advantage at intermission.
In the second stanza, Montana State took its largest lead of the game at 38-30 on a Morton three-pointer. NAU rattled off a 19-8 run to take a 49-46 margin at the 10:49 mark on a free throw by Wahl.
The Bobcats regained the lead on a pair of Kati Burrows free throws, and held the advantage until Metz converted two free throws with 2:03 remaining to give NAU a two-point lead. Another Metz basket gave the Lumberjacks a 65-62 lead with 1:40 left, before Burrows went to work scoring four unanswered points to give MSU a 66-65 lead with 34-seconds to go.
With 22-seconds remaining, Kim Winkfield scored from seven-feet to give Northern Arizona a one-point advantage. A Connolly attempt with six-seconds remaining caromed off the rim and the Lumberjacks converted four-of-four from the line in the final two seconds.
Burrows paced all Bobcats in the loss with 22 points, while Hillary Scott and Scotta Morton added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Burrows and Briana Fields led MSU under the boards with five rebounds, apiece.
NAU was led by Wahl with 25 points, while Nicky Eason added 12 and Metz and Winkfield chipped in ten, each.
MSU will host Sacramento State on Saturday night.
