Montana State Skiers Sit in Fifth After Opening Day of UNM Invite

The Bobcats sit in fifth behind Colorado 223, Denver 219, New Mexico 190 and Utah 181. Also competing in the invitational is Nevada 149, Whitman 83, Western State 80, Boise State 55 and Alaska-Anchorage 28.
Montana State’s nordic skiers opened the invitational combining for 105 points. The highest finish of the day for the Bobcats belonged to Mark Iverson, who finished seventh overall in the men’s 10-kilometer classic race in a time of 31:20.8.
Iverson was followed by teammates Jackson Harris, 18th, 32:53.6; Chris Coe, 23rd, 33:46.1; and Nathan Park, 27th, 34:32.2
Fraser Opel paced the Bobcat women’s team in the five-kilometer classic event. Opel finished 12th in a time of 19:31, and was followed by Mandy Bowden, 14th, 19:37; Rachel Goldstein, 16th, 19:51; and Karoline Teien, 19:55. The MSU women skied without its top performer Emily Robins.
In women’s giant slalom, Montana State was paced by Chi Chi Williams, who placed 15th with a two-run clocking of 2:10.0. She was followed closely by Smaranda Munteanu, 18th, 2:10.3; Crystal Wright, 20th, 2:10.6; Alex Munteanu, 23rd, 2:10.9; and Christina Kim, 30th, 2:14.2.
The men’s alpine event was canceled due to bad weather and poor visibility.
The New Mexico Invitational will conclude Saturday afternoon.
