Bobcats Host Weber, ISU, Grizzlies in Duals Friday

Montana State’s track and field squad kicks off ‘Cat-Griz weekend festivities hosting Montana and a pair of other Big Sky foes in a four-way dual meet on Friday night. MSU faces the arch-rival Grizzlies for the second time in three weeks, and also squares off with Idaho State and Weber State.

This Week
Montana State hosts a four-way dual on Friday, featuring Weber State, Idaho State and Montana. Both Weber and the Bengals bring nationally-ranked teams to the Fieldhouse. Weber’s men are 28th and the women 21st, while Idaho State’s men are 17th and women 27th. MSU’s men are the 27th, while the women are 41st. UM’s women are 51st, the men 44th. Weber’s men were projected to finish second in the Big Sky, ISU’s third, UM and MSU tied for fourth. On the women’s side, Weber was picked first, MSU third, Montana fifth, and ISU sixth.
League Leaders
Ashley Hadway joins two MSU teammates on top of the Big Sky Conference leaders lists this week. The junior owns the best mark in the 5,000 (17:35.90). Megan Lee (57-5 in the weight throw) is also a league leader on the women’s side. Among Bobcat men, Thomas Seely (16-0 in the pole vault is the only Bobcat male to hold down a top spot.
Weighty Matters
A year after finishing 1st-through-5th in the women’s weight throw at the Big Sky indoor meet, MSU is up to its old tricks. Lynn Craver, Carra Greyn and Megan Lee hold down the first three spots in the Big Sky weight throw standings. Ashley Jones is 9th and Lisa Kilgore 12th this week, as well.
Youth Served Here
Of the 23 different spots in Big Sky top five lists this week occupied by a Bobcat, 18 are held by underclassmen -- seven by juniors, six by sophomores, and five by freshmen.
Vaunted Vaulter
Thomas Seely appears ready to grab the mantle of MSU’s next outstanding pole vaulter. A sophomore, Seely’s best jump of 16-0 leads the Big Sky and ties him for 10th on MSU’s all-time top 10.

“This meet is a great opportunity for people in our area to watch a really fine collegiate track and field meet. Bringing Idaho State, Weber State and Montana together in the Fieldhouse has become a traditional meet now, and has really grown into a tradition. Almost always we see some of the top performances in the regular season -- not just MSU, but the Big Sky as a whole -- come from this meet. The intensity level of this meet is at least as great, if not greater than, last week’s meet in Pocatello because we introduce the team scoring element. This will probably be a really good preview of what is likely to occur at the Big Sky meet. The scoring format is different, but of the five schools that really do track and field in the sense that they are the ones traditionally battling for the top four spots and especially for the championship, four will be in this meet. The exception, of course, is NAU. I wish we were a little ahead of where we are, but I expect that we’ll really show some outstanding improvement this weekend. Historically our breakout meet has been in the fourth week, and this is our fourth meet of the season.”
