“We need to do a better job defending and boxing out under the boards,” said MSU first-year coach Tricia Binford. “We didn’t come close to competing in the rebound category and that’s something we’ll be practicing.”
Long Beach State (4-2) used a commanding 52-34 advantage in rebounding to notch its fourth straight victory. Included in the total were 24 offensive rebounds.
The 49ers had three players in double-digits, led by Rosalyn Omoruyi with 21 points- almost 17 over her season average. In addition, Crystal McCutcheon and Jayme Connors chipped in 20 and 18 points, respectively.
Montana State (0-6) was led by Morton, who converted 7-of-12 from the field, including a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range. Sophomore Katy Proietti came off the bench to notch a career-high 13 points on 4-of-5 from the floor.
LBSU jumped out to an early 21-6 advantage before Montana State closed to within 33-32 at the 2:44 mark following a Morton three-pointer. The 49ers answered with a 10-0 run to enter intermission with a 43-32 lead.
In the second stanza, Long Beach built the margin to 47-32 before the Bobcats stormed back to close to within 55-51 with 10:50 left on a pair of free throws by Nubia Garcia.
Again, the 49ers had an answer, rattling off a 5-0 run to put the game away.
MSU shot 34 percent from the field and were led under the boards by Amanda DeHaan with a team-high seven rebounds.
“It was nice to see Scotta get to where we need her to be,” Binford said. “I’m also excited with the play of our bench and in particular, the play of Katy Proietti and Erin Goodman.”
Montana State will host Air Force on Saturday at 2:05 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
