Bobcats Topple DU in Overtime

In a game of big shots and big momentum swings, Nick Dissly had the biggest of both. Montana State's junior forward scored 10 points in overtime, nailing a pair of huge three-pointers in leading the Bobcats to an 84-76 win over Denver in Bozeman on Thursday.
Dissly's first extra period three-pointer put MSU ahead, and his second triple arrested Denver's momentum, cutting a four-point lead to one and setting the stage for a memorable Bobcat win.
"I was wide open," he said of his second overtime trey, which was followed by a Derrick Edmonds three-pointer, six straight Bobcat free throws, and a Dissly dunk which served as an exclamation point. "You've got to knock those down when Marvin (Moss) finds you open, or you're going to hear about it from him," he said with a smile.
Dissly's 10 overtime points propelled Montana State to its first win in four tries against the Pioneers in his career. The Bobcats shot 6-for-7 from the field in the overtime after hitting just 43% of their shots in regular play. Ja'Ron Jefferson led the 'Cats with 21 points, while Derrick Edmonds had 18 off the bench.
But the post-game buzz surrounded Dissly's play in overtime. "Down four and he hit the three," Bobcat coach Mick Durham said of Dissly's big shot. "Nick's shot was big."
Denver's DaWhawn Walker set up the overtime period by hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key, the second opposing player in four nights to hit a big three-pointer from essentially the same spot. "That was a tougher shot than the other guy made," Dissly said. "I thought I was on him."
Portland owned most of the first half, rattling off a 12-1 run starting at the 9:43 mark, to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room. "I wasn't very happy at halftime," Durham said.
Dissly concurred. "Coach got on me at halftime," he said. The result was a 13-point, seven-rebound performance after the break.
Montana State returns after Christmas to host the Bobcat Holiday Stores GranTree Classic on December 29-30. MSU faces North Dakota State at 8 pm on Thursday night, while San Jose State and Northern Illinois play at 5:30 pm.
