Bobcats Help Local Children

For Montana State sophomore distance runner Elisabeth Driscoll, it’s like math.
“It just adds up,” the Bozeman native said of the $2,000 contribution made by Montana State student-athletes to the local Toys for Tots program that provides Christmas gifts for children that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them. “This is something we can do to help, and I think we were all glad to be involved.”
MSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee spearheaded the charge, and the entire gift came from student-athlete donations. “We try to instill in our young people that we don’t live in a vacuum,” said MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields. “As they graduate and join a community involvement becomes important, and we know that it’s our job to encourage that. We’re proud that our SAAC has adopted this cause and worked so hard, and we’re also proud that our student-athletes have embraced it. This shows the kind of people this athletic program attracts.”
Bob Metcalf, of Bozeman’s Toys for Tots organization, said the efforts of the Bobcat student-athletes and other organizations make Christmas a happier time for many Bozeman-area families. “These toys mean so much to a lot of children in unfortunate circumstances this Christmas,” he said. “These young people have taken the effort to make this season more enjoyable for so many kids in our area, and that is very important.”
Each of Montana State’s 15 varsity programs contributed to the SAAC Toys for Tot drive, and MSU Associate Athletic Director Camie Bechtold figures that the participation rate of all MSU’s 320 student-athletes surpasses 80%. “The participation level was very high and very enthusiastic,” Bechtold said.
For Driscoll, the sum effect of the program was easy to sell and easy to enjoy. “It was a great chance to help out.”
