Zips Deflate Bobcat Women

Despite a career-matching 18 point effort from Montana State point guard Alyssa Nelson, the Bobcat women’s basketball squad’s quest for its first victory under first-year head coach Tricia Binford came up short, as Akron handed MSU a 73-60 setback, Thursday in Rhodes Arena.
Trailing 43-29 at the 11:55 mark of the second stanza, Montana State (0-4) went on a 23-10 run to close to within 53-52 on a Whitney Connolly three-pointer with 6:57 left.
Akron (1-3) answered with a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to put the game away.
“We didn’t have any leadership,” Binford said. “Alyssa (Nelson) led by example, but we need to get our captains, our upperclassmen, talking and getting everyone going.”
Nelson, a junior from Edina, Minn., connected on seven-of-16 from the field, while adding four assists and three steals. Also in double-figures for the Bobcats was freshman Jenny Heringer with 11 points, including three treys.
Akron was paced by freshman Niki McCoy, who finished with 21 points and five assists.
“Akron was a lot more physical than we were, and I hate to say that because it deals with effort,” Binford said. “We had a lot of mental breakdowns. We’ll regroup tomorrow and look forward to the challenge of Kent State.”
For the game, the Bobcats shot 38 percent from the field and had a season-high eight three-pointers. The Zips shot at a 54-percent clip, including a six-of-11 effort from long distance.
Akron held a 39-33 advantage under the boards. MSU was led in rebounding by Anne Phippard and Nubia Garcia with seven boards, apiece.
MSU will play at Kent State at 12 p.m. (EST) on Saturday.
