The Bobcats, who gave up 91 points in its game against Carroll College last week, limited the Yellowjackets to 34 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range.
“Our defense was like night and day,” said MSU first-year head coach Tricia Binford. “I thought we had good ball pressure and were way more disciplined on defense.”
Nelson, a 5-foot-5 guard from Edina, Minn., connected on six-of-eight from the field, including three three-pointers. Also in double-figure scoring for the Bobcats were Scotta Morton 15 and Whitney Connolly 11.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 45 percent from the field, including a seven-of-16 effort from three-point range. The game featured an experimental nuance that moved the three-point line to 20-6, instead of the regular 19-9.
“One of the goals for the game was to get Scotta (Morton) some shots and involved in the offense,” Binford said. “We ran the first play for her and she knocked down the three. That was a big confidence boost.”
MSU also held a 43-32 advantage under the boards, and were paced by true freshman Nubia Garcia with a game-high ten rebounds.
MSU-Billings was led by Tanya Petersen and Jen Smith with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
The Bobcats open their regular-season, Nov. 18 when it hosts Oregon State.
