“We couldn’t pass at all,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We had a lackluster performance. If you can’t pass, you can’t get into system, and that’s exactly what happened.”
Portland State (19-6, 9-3) recorded ten service aces, while Montana State (12-13, 5-6) converted twice. PSU also held a 76-47 advantage in kills, while also out-digging MSU 60-37.
“We passed decently in the opening game and got out to a big lead,” Malauulu said. “Things went south from that point on.”
MSU was paced by Meggie Malyurek and Kim Stonehouse with 11 kills, apiece.
Senior Megan Zanto led all players with six blocks. En route, the Helena native became Montana State’s all-time blocks leader, surpassing Karen Weyler’s mark of 570 stuffs. The mark is also fourth best in Big Sky Conference history.
Portland State was paced by Jessica Brodie and Jessica Vanzant with 26 and 24 kills, respectively.
Despite the loss, Montana State clinched a berth in its tenth consecutive Big Sky Conference Tournament, via an Eastern Washington sweep over Montana.
MSU will play at Eastern Washington, Saturday night.
