Bobcats Break Into Win Column

Reserve guard Derrick Edmonds made a strong case for more playing time Sunday, scoring 16 points and adding two steals in leading Montana State to an 84-60 win over NAIA foe Wayland Baptist in Bozeman. The victory was MSU's first of the season.
"I really think Derrick will be a major factor for us this year," Durham said of the junior college transfer that averaged two points in MSU's first three games, all losses. "He's solid defensively, we just need to see more of what he can do offensively."
Edmonds showed a deft shooting touch from long and middle ranges Saturday, hitting six of his eight shots, including four of five three-point attempts. "It felt pretty good," Edmonds said of his breakout game as a Bobcat. "I've been wanting to get into the offensive rhythm I'm accustomed to."
Montana State found its offensive rhythm early against the Pioneers, jumping to a 21-5 lead in the first six-and-a-half minutes. Wayland Baptist never got closer than 12. "I really thought the first 30 minutes we played pretty solid," said Bobcat coach Mick Durham.
The Bobcats shot 53% on the night and turned the ball over only 12 times after averaging 20.0 in the first three games, but a different stat caught Durham's eye. "We had 23 assists," Durham said after a week of emphasizing better shot selection. "That's a good start."
Ja'Ron Jefferson scored 12 points for the 'Cats, dishing out three assists. Nick Dissly had six assists, while Ted Morris grabbed 10 rebounds and Al Beye six.
Montana State plays at Northern Colorado on Thursday, and Denver on Saturday.
